What is Buprenorphine?
Buprenorphine is a medication that is prescribed to treat people with opiate addiction. It contains small amounts of opiates to make withdrawal easier and less painful. Buprenorphine can be detected in the urine for up to a week after being used. In chronic or long-term users, this can be even longer.
Buprenorphine is also known as suboxone, subutex and temgesic and is used as a medication for addiction management. It is similar to methadone, but is thought to be less addictive and easier to transition off of.
Buprenorphine contains enough opioid for the person to be relieved of their withdrawal symptoms, but not enough for the person to feel “high.” Some people use buprenorphine with other drugs, like alcohol or benzodiazepines, in an attempt to feel the effects of the opioid. This is dangerous because both drugs can slow respirations, which can be potentially fatal.
